Failed ITV?? here´s what you can do

There is a lot of confusion surrounding the issue of what you can and cannot do with your car if it has failed an ITV, so in order to answer potential questions please read on.

Yes, you do have 60 days counting from the day the car has failed its test to get the work done and return to the ITV centre; however this only means that if you return within the 60 days you do not have to pay the full price of a test, only the 22.18 re-test cost. Go over 60 days and you will have to pay the full price again.

No, you cannot use the car within the 60 days to go shopping, take the kids to school or commute to work. The only time the car can legally be on the road is if you are going to the garage to get the repair work completed or you are going back to the ITV centre.

The best course of action to take if your car has failed to pass the test is to go directly to the garage to start work immediately, do not be tempted to leave it for another day. Do give the garage the papers from the ITV Centre, this will give the garage a fighting chance to get the work completed faster as they will know exactly what is wrong, rather than having to rely on a possible inaccurate translation!

The meaning of the word ‘Leve´ is that something is in need of checking at your garage, it could be that your brakes although working and within the acceptable range to pass an ITV, they are borderline and it is better to get them fixed now rather than wait till your next ITV is due. 

A further years driving with brakes that are not up to the best performance is not a good idea for your safety. A ‘Leve´, does not mean that your car has failed the ITV.

‘Grave’, this means serious and your car has failed the ITV. The only thing you can do is get the repair completed and return to the ITV asap.

If you continue to use your car within the 60 days you will be putting yourself at great risk as your car is not safe for one thing and if you get caught by the Police you could end up in lots of bother, with fines and the possibility of your car being impounded, as it is not safe to be on the road.
