Facts about Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol is the Andalusian coastline that stretches from Nerja in the east to Manilva in the west. The 20 miles Pass through Torre del Mar , the provincial capital Malaga, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella, San Pedro de Alcantara and Estepona. Costa del Sol is sometimes also counted as the 30 miles extending from Motril in the east to Cadiz in the west. The Costa del Sol stretches across three provinces: Granada, Malaga and Cadiz.

Costa Tropical

Nowadays, however, located in Granada Province is the Costa Tropical and a part that is located in Cádiz province known as the Costa de la Luz. The Costa del Sol has always been an important Fishing and trading centrefounded by Phoenicians and Greeks.

Spain's best climates

Today - thanks to the best climate in Spain - tourist industry is the major source of income for the indigenous population, especially during the summer months. During the winter months increased population numbers with many foreigners, with the largest group consists of British Nationals. An estimated population of about 250,000 British Nationals more or less steadily in the area during the winte. The power of all winter weary golfers who yearn for better climate has naturally contributed to this development.

When did the British Tourism start on the Costa del Sol?

It was in the early 1970s that the Brittish really discovered the Costa del Sol Although the first UK tourist were here in the 50´s. Charter flights started coming to Torremolinos started the interest in tourism on the Costa del Sol w which was as great for the the British. Torremolinos quickly became a center of the British tourists and remained so for many years.

Small villages

Benalmadena, Mijas, Fuengriola, Marbella and Estepona are smaller fishing villages that have grown into major tourist destination as teh Coast has grown in popularity. When Madrid architect, José Banus, built marina of Puerto Banus, it became a luxury project that immediately attracted tourists from all over northern Europe. He built the casino, bullring and many homes around Puerto Banus and so the coast had another hot spot for tourism and for those who wanted to buy luxury property.

Golf Courses

Step number three was the construction of golf courses on the Costa del Sol and because UK has always had many golfers so it became a favourite holiday to travel to southern Spain in the winter and play golf. They wanted better weather and a nice climate . Since the 1960s, the resorts between Torremolinos and Marbella developed into tourist cities of the highest caliber. To these we must also consider Benalmadena, Mijas Costa and Fuengirola.


Costa del Sol takes up about 300 kilometres of the Mediterranean littoral that corresponds to the province of Malaga. The Costa del Sol needs no introduction; the combination of endless sunshine, long lazy beaches, sleepy whitewashed mountain villages, unspoilt natural beauty, a wealth of golf courses, mouth-watering cuisine and the fun loving yet relaxed nature of the Andalucian people unsurprisingly makes this area the largest expat community in Spain. This region’s popularity continues, a trend that sees no sign of stopping.

The Costa Del Sol welcomes more than two million people a year who arrive at Malaga international airport and head to one of the many resorts located along this stretch of coastline from Estepona in the west to Nerja in the east.

With the Costa del Sol weather giving over 300 days of sunshine per year it isn't difficult to understand why it is one of Europe's top holiday destinations.

There are around 70 Costa del Sol golf courses on the "Costa del Golf" which can be played all year round as well as a whole range of other activities available such as sailing, scuba diving, horse riding, dolphin safaris, etc. The list is endless.


Located in the historic region of La Axarquía, Nerja is bright town on the Málaga coast which has a beautiful sea front formed by beaches, coves and cliffs.


Situated on the slopes of the Sierra Almijara mountains, it offers some of the most spectacular views on the Costa del Sol.
