The 2102 Torrevieja Calendar was officially presented and launched last week at the offices of Alamo International who are the principal sponsors along with Aroca Seiquer Lawyers and Brithol Insurance Agency. The calendar which has been organised and produced once again by Andy Ormiston is sold by various local charities and organisations to raise funds for themselves and the presentation was opened by Alamo International’s managing Director Darren Lilley who said that last year’s calendar had raised over €8,000 for local charities. Andy Ormiston in characteristic style said he had been in two minds whether to produce a calendar for next year in view of the Mayan prophecy that the world would come to an end on 2012. He mentioned that the theme if this year’s calendar which features photographs mostly taken by Carlos Garcia was ‘A Blue and Green perspective’. Andy said that two decades ago Torrevieja had been a barren place with few green spaces and ‘few birds and trees’. However since then over 200 green spaces have been created or renovated many of which include recreation areas for the young and old alike.

As well as the selection of fine photographs of Torrevieja the calendar has details of Spanish holidays and fiestas as well as other main holidays including those from the UK, Chinese New Year and Ramadan. Andy made special mention of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee next year in June and suggested that the British residents might like to organise something special to mark the occasion and he also mentioned The Royal British Legion’s 90thanniversary this year and that local artist Cathy Carson has recorded and released a special CD called ‘For our Tomorrows’ the sales of which will be going to the Poppy Appeal. Next year is also a Leap Year and with a twinkle in his eye Andy reminded the audience at the presentation that during a Leap Year unattached ladies are permitted to ask single men to marry them on the 29th of February and apparently in Scotland if the woman’s offer is spurned she is entitled to ask for a sum of money for her loss of dignity – so single men beware.
The calendar will be available from many of the participating charities which includes Age Concern, AFA, The Rascals, TAABS, AECC, ALPE, Apanee, Cruz Roja and Caritas. In particular it will be available from the charity shops of AECC, AFA and Age Concern and also the Alamo International offices in Torrevieja.
